Initiated and led by Lin Cuixi, with _ao_ao_ing ensemble and Wu Fenglin (Linzi)

A long term collaboration with Linzi, a party supply wholesaler in Shanghai, that follows cheap festive goods from her market stall through livestream platforms, museums and a market in Amsterdam.

Linzi runs a small party supply shop in Shanghai's Chenghuangmiao small commodities market, and was the ensemble's prop supplier for years. After the 2022 Shanghai lockdown, that trading relationship became the work itself. Each iteration puts Linzi's stock back into circulation under a different system of exchange (a livestream sale, a self service shop, an auction, a market stall) and asks what these "non essential" goods, and the people who make and sell them, are worth. Linzi takes part as supplier and collaborator, and her own photographs of family, neighbors and customers travel with the goods.

How the system works

The goods: inexpensive festive items (lanterns, feather fans, tinsel) that originate in Yiwu, China's wholesale hub for small commodities.
The exchange: visitors take part as buyers, not spectators. Every purchase is a real transaction.
The point of sale: Cuixi coded and designed an online point of sale system that prints each buyer's receipt as an artwork, turning the transaction record into the object people take home.
The price: in Amsterdam, each item carries two prices, its Yiwu wholesale price and its European market price, so the supply chain's markup is visible at the moment of purchase.
